Prostate Cancer on the Rise: Experts Warn Against Alcohol and Unhealthy Lifestyle
Prostate cancer has become a major health concern in recent years, with men above 40 years old being the most affected demographic. Dr. Chidiebere Ogo, a chief consultant and urologist at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has warned men in this age group against excessive alcohol consumption to reduce the growing cases of prostate cancer.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Ogo identified excessive consumption of alcohol, unhealthy lifestyle, and excessive sex activities as major contributing factors to the increasing cases of prostate cancer. He emphasized that prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in men above 40 years old, highlighting the need for early detection and appropriate treatment.
"Men above 40 years old need to go for early cancer screening because early detection and treatment are crucial to the survival of the patient," Dr. Ogo said, stressing the importance of timely medical intervention.
Dr. Ogo also advised the public to adopt a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a diet rich in vegetables, to build a strong immunity against cancer. In addition, he appealed to the federal and state governments to collaborate on building a research center to further investigate the causes of cancer and develop effective solutions.
The warning from Dr. Ogo comes as a timely reminder of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and seeking regular medical check-ups, particularly for men in the high-risk category. By taking proactive steps towards preventive care and early detection, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer and increase their chances of survival.
