Elon Musk’s $1M Voter Giveaway Under Fire

Elon Musk’s Latest Stunt Under Scrutiny: $1 Million Daily Giveaways to Voters Spark Federal Concerns

In a move that has raised eyebrows, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s America PAC has been warned by the US Justice Department that its $1 million daily giveaways to registered voters may be in breach of federal law. Musk, a vocal supporter of former president Donald Trump, announced the contest in Pennsylvania, one of the seven crucial “swing states” that could determine the outcome of the November 5 presidential election.

According to reports from CNN and 24sight News, the Justice Department’s warning letter to Musk’s political action committee highlights the potential violation of federal law, which prohibits paying individuals to register to vote. Despite this, the Justice Department has declined to comment on the matter.

Musk’s contest, which aims to give away $1 million to a randomly selected registered voter in a swing state each day until the election, has been criticized by election law experts. To participate, voters must sign a petition supporting “free speech and the right to bear arms,” which some argue could influence their decision to register.

Danielle Lang, a Georgetown Law School professor specializing in election law, has expressed concerns that the contest could be subject to civil or even criminal enforcement by the Department of Justice. “It is illegal to give out money on the condition that recipients register as voters,” Lang emphasized, adding that the terms of the contest clearly contravene federal law.

Musk’s efforts to support Trump have been nothing short of extraordinary in recent weeks. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has donated a staggering $75 million to a pro-Trump political action committee and has made appearances at campaign rallies. This latest stunt has only served to fuel speculation about the boundaries of campaign finance laws and the role of influencers in shaping the outcome of elections.

The billionaire’s unapologetic approach to politics has sparked heated debate, and it remains to be seen how the contest will play out in the coming weeks. One thing is certain: with federal scrutiny intensifying, Musk’s latest maneuver is set to ignite a firestorm of controversy that will be closely watched by millions around the world.
