Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama Shows Frustration as Teammate Misses Easy Pass
In a preseason game against the Miami Heat, San Antonio Spurs’ sophomore Victor Wembanyama displayed a moment of frustration when his teammate, Harrison Barnes, missed an opportunity to pass the ball to him in the paint. The incident occurred less than three minutes into the third quarter, with Wembanyama spinning and cutting to the basket while losing his defender.
However, instead of passing the ball to the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama, Barnes passed to Chris Paul, who was jogging towards the 3-point line. Wembanyama’s reaction was evident as he clapped his hands in frustration and was heard shouting in disappointment on the broadcast. The play ultimately resulted in a turnover, allowing Heat star Jimmy Butler to score an easy layup.
This incident highlights the adjustments the Spurs are still making as a team, particularly with their new veteran additions, Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes. Paul, a seasoned point guard, has extensive experience playing alongside elite big men, including Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan during his time with the LA Clippers. Despite the early preseason game mishap, Wembanyama seems optimistic about playing alongside Paul. When reflecting on their early games together and a highlight lob play in their first preseason game, Wembanyama said, "Felt very natural. Felt like it was the good play. And he’s making a lot of good plays."
Wembanyama also praised Paul’s impact on the team, emphasizing the value of having an experienced veteran on the court. "Being on the court with him certainly feels like he’s got things in control," Wembanyama said. "It’s reassuring, a little bit. It’s one more teammate I can rely on in tough moments or doubt moments. It’s only positive."
In his preseason debut, Paul recorded five points, three assists, and two rebounds in 23 minutes, followed by a three-point, eight-assist performance. Both games resulted in Spurs victories, offering a glimpse of hope for the team’s improvement on last year’s 22-60 record.
As the Spurs continue to work on their team chemistry, the addition of Chris Paul and his experience playing alongside elite big men could be the key to unlocking Victor Wembanyama’s full potential. With their newly formed partnership, the Spurs are optimistic about their chances this season.
