Kano State Police Command to Respect Court Order on Upcoming Election

The Kano State Police Command in Nigeria has announced its intention to comply with a court order that restricts its participation in the upcoming Local Government election, scheduled to take place on October 26, 2024. The announcement was made through a video message released on Friday by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Abdullahi Haruna.

According to Haruna, the court order explicitly states that the police should not participate in the forthcoming local government election in the state. Despite this restriction, the Kano State Police Command has assured the public that it will continue to prioritize the safety and security of all inhabitants in the state. “The Police in Kano are not participating in the election,” Haruna emphasized. “However, it’s our responsibility to ensure no breakdown of law and order in the state, and we’re always alive to our responsibilities.”

In line with this commitment, the state police commissioner, Salman Garba, has convened a meeting with senior officials to re-strategize efforts and ensure the protection of lives and properties in Kano state. During the meeting, Commissioner Garba stressed the importance of proactive measures to prevent and respond to security threats. He directed operational commanders to enhance patrols, increase visibility and presence in high-risk areas, and intensify intelligence gathering.

Garba also emphasized the need for collaboration with communities and the sharing of information to maintain law and order, prevent criminal activities, and ensure the safety of all inhabitants in the state. The commissioner’s directives are seen as crucial steps in fulfilling the Nigeria Police Force’s constitutional mandate to protect lives and property, as well as maintain law and order in Kano state.

As the election approaches, the Kano State Police Command’s commitment to respecting the court order while prioritizing public safety and security is likely to be closely monitored by the public and stakeholders alike.
