Kano State Imposes Movement Restrictions Ahead of Local Government Elections

In a bid to ensure peaceful and orderly conduct of the polls, the Kano State Government has announced a restriction of movement across the state ahead of the local government elections scheduled for Saturday, October 26. The directive was made public by the Commissioner of Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, in a press statement released on Friday.

The restriction, set to last from midnight until 6 p.m. on election day, is aimed at guaranteeing the safety of lives and property during the local government elections. “The restriction of movement is a precautionary measure to guarantee the safety of lives and property during the local government elections,” Dantiye explained. “We urge the general public to comply with this directive and cooperate with security agencies.”

Essential service providers, including election officials, security personnel, and journalists with valid accreditation, will be exempt from the restriction. The commissioner emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring a smooth electoral process, calling on the public to support these efforts.

“We count on the support of the public to make this possible,” Dantiye added. He also called on residents to peacefully exercise their civic rights and avoid actions that could disrupt the election. In addition to the movement restriction, security agencies have been placed on high alert across the 44 local government areas, with checkpoints established to monitor compliance.

The local government elections in Kano are expected to be highly contested, with several political parties vying for control of the councils. While some have welcomed the government’s decision to restrict movement as a necessary step to prevent violence and ensure voter safety, others are eagerly awaiting the outcome of the polls.

The Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has assured citizens of its readiness to conduct a credible election. Urging voters to come out and cast their votes, a KANSIEC spokesperson stated, “Everything is set for the polls, and we have taken all necessary steps to ensure the integrity of the process. Voters should not be deterred by the restriction but should come out in large numbers to exercise their rights.”

As voters prepare to head to the polls, the government’s efforts to maintain peace and order will be put to the test. With all stakeholders committed to a smooth and credible electoral process, the people of Kano State eagerly await the outcome of the local government elections.
