Nollywood Actress Jumoke George Opens Up About 14-Year Hiatus from Film Industry.
In a candid interview with Oyinmomo TV, renowned Nollywood actress Jumoke George shed light on the challenges that led to her prolonged absence from the film industry, spanning over 14 years. The actress, who is unapologetic about her dark complexion, attributed her hiatus to both her skin tone and her refusal to engage in sex-for-roles, a practice she strongly opposes.
According to George, her dark complexion often led to directors suggesting that she be made to look lighter on screen. However, she refused to succumb to their demands, emphasizing that she would not compromise her values or allow her complexion to dictate her career path.
In her own words, “My dark complexion was not the only setback I faced in my career. Another reason why I did not get movie roles for like 14 years is my refusal to sleep around.” She narrated how she would counter producers who complained about her skin tone, telling them to simply “add my lighting to the scene to make me look lighter.”
George’s stance on sex-for-roles, however, proved to be a major obstacle in her career. The actress revealed that about 20 to 30 executives had wanted her to engage in sex-for-roles, which she vehemently opposed. When she asked one of the directors why she was no longer being considered for roles, she was told that it was because of her refusal to sleep with them. “I just started crying and when I got home, I prayed to God to take control,” she shared.
George’s story is a testament to the struggles that many women in the film industry face, including sexism, harassment, and body shaming. Despite these challenges, her conviction and determination have allowed her to stand her ground and maintain her integrity.
With her return to the film industry, George’s story sends a powerful message about self-acceptance and the importance of staying true to oneself. As she eloquently puts it, “I will glow with this skin till old age and do not forget, black does not crack.”
