Kanu’s Detention Sparks Debate as Tinubu Appoints Bianca as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

The recent appointment of Bianca Ojukwu as the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs by President Bola Tinubu has sparked debate among stakeholders. Many view it as a strategic move toward national healing between the Southeast and Nigeria, particularly amid the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
In his first cabinet reshuffle, Tinubu reassigned 10 ministers to new portfolios, removed seven, and appointed five. Bianca, alongside other Southeastern ministers, such as Doris Uzoka-Anite, Minister of State for Finance, Uche Nnaji, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Technology, and David Umahi, Minister of Works, is seen as a step towards unity.
Katchi Ononuju, Director General of the Heritage Centre, believes Tinubu recognizes the need for national healing, hence Bianca’s appointment. However, he points out that Bianca is not a magic wand and that inclusion comes through actions, not just appointments. Ononuju believes that for Bianca’s appointment to be effective, the president must back it up with action.
Bianca’s potential influence in advocating for Kanu’s release is also a topic of discussion. Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu’s lead counsel, believes Bianca is in a strategic position to advise Tinubu on releasing the IPOB leader. He notes that Bianca has publicly called for Kanu’s release.
Activist lawyer Madubuachi Idam describes Bianca’s ministerial appointment as a strategic move for the Southeast, boosting the chances of Kanu’s release from detention and enhancing the reputation of Tinubu’s administration.
While some view Bianca’s appointment as a step toward national healing, others see it as a strategic move to pave the way for Kanu’s release. As the debate continues, one thing is clear – Bianca’s appointment has sparked a conversation about national healing and the potential for unity in Nigeria.
