Cross River and Akwa Ibom Governors Urge Religious Leaders to Promote Patriotism in Nigeria

The governors of Cross River State and Akwa Ibom, Bassey Otu and Umo Eno, have called on Nigeria’s clergymen and religious leaders to emphasize patriotism in their teachings. Speaking in Calabar during the installation of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria’s (PFN) National Publicity Secretary, Emmah Isong, as Archbishop, both governors underscored the role of religious leaders in fostering national unity and pride.

Governor Umo Eno, who is also a cleric, urged religious leaders, particularly Christian clergy, to encourage citizens to embrace patriotism, which he believes is essential for Nigeria’s advancement. “Clergymen are front leaders and should help propagate and underscore the importance of patriotism in driving Nigeria’s progress,” Eno remarked, calling on faith leaders to spread a message of national pride and responsibility.

Governor Bassey Otu praised Archbishop Isong’s contributions to the spiritual and national development of Cross River State. “God has used Archbishop Isong to bless Cross River State in numerous ways. He has guided our men and women towards God’s path and taught them the importance of nationhood and patriotism,” he said. In recognition of Isong’s work, Governor Otu announced his reappointment as Chairman of the Cross River State Anti-Tax Agency, a role he has held since the previous administration.

The event gathered notable religious figures, political elites, traditional leaders, members of the press, and well-wishers who celebrated Archbishop Isong’s elevation and echoed the governors’ call for religious leaders to play a leading role in nurturing patriotism and national unity across Nigeria.
