The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has announced plans to gradually restrict the use of tricycles, commonly known as “Keke,” in parts of Abuja’s city center. Speaking on Thursday during the launch of the FCT Renewed Hope Youth Empowerment Programme, Wike emphasized the government’s commitment to uplifting youth in the FCT through empowerment initiatives.

Under this plan, tricycles will be removed from prominent areas like Maitama, Guzape, and Asokoro as part of a pilot program. Wike clarified that the policy does not ban tricycles entirely but limits their operations to certain parts of the capital. “I’m not saying there will be no more Keke. No, you will go to certain areas. But for now, we will try to see the pilot scheme in Maitama, Guzape, and Asokoro. Let us see how it will work, and by the grace of God, it will work well because Mr. President means well for everybody,” Wike stated.

The minister also revealed plans for enhanced security measures for commercial transport operators, noting that some tricycle and taxi drivers are suspected of aiding criminal activities. Starting January, Wike said, commercial bus and taxi operators would undergo security screening, and all vehicles must adopt the official Abuja taxi colors. “From January next year, nobody will operate as a taxi driver or a bus driver without approval from the security, without security profiling, and without the Abuja color,” he affirmed.

In his directive to Abdullahi Ango, Mandate Secretary for the Youth Development Secretariat, Wike emphasized the importance of creating meaningful youth development programs. He discouraged funding conferences that do not directly benefit the youth, stressing a focus on skill acquisition programs. He also announced plans to revive a dormant skills acquisition center in Nyanya, which would offer ICT and other training opportunities for young people.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve youth opportunities while ensuring safer and more organized transportation within the FCT.
