Reflecting on her journey, Ufuoma admitted she often feared for her life, particularly because she did not always heed her doctors’ advice. “My weight, people do not understand when I say I cannot afford to put on weight, I do not want to die. I have little children. I had pushed my body and it was borderline stage 4,” she explained, emphasizing the stakes involved in her health decisions.
Last year was particularly harrowing for Ufuoma, who described it as a period when she genuinely thought she might not survive. “I have battled chronic kidney for a while, for about 12 years now,” she said. During this challenging time, she found herself negotiating with her doctor about her treatment. The doctor advised her to go home and rest, emphasizing the importance of lowering her blood pressure.
Ufuoma recalled her response to the doctor, saying, “What if I go home? I promise you I will sleep today, before I leave tomorrow.” However, the doctor insisted, “Ufuoma, I need you to sleep now. If you can take tabs and just sleep, I need you to rest. I need your blood pressure to drop.” This conversation underscored the critical nature of her health.
Despite the severity of her condition, Ufuoma’s determination shone through. She recounted how her doctor mixed her medications, which ultimately allowed her to return to work.
