Tunji Alausa, the former Minister of State for Health and Social Development, has praised the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for the successful rescue of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola and her nephew after they spent 10 months in captivity.

Now serving as Minister of Education, Alausa expressed his gratitude during a reunion event facilitated by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu in Abuja on Friday. He commended the military and other security agencies for their efforts in securing the safe release of the kidnapped victims.

Alausa acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to the safety of all citizens and highlighted the administration’s significant investments in improving national security. “As we can see, security is significantly better all across the country, but we are not there yet. It is going to continue to get better,” he stated.

He specifically thanked the armed forces for their commitment, emphasizing that Dr. Popoola was kept alive throughout her ordeal, which the NSA had continually assured the public. He noted, “This shows the skills of our armed forces; they did this without paying ransom, and they secured the release of Popoola and her nephew. The country Nigeria is forever grateful to them.”

Alausa also expressed appreciation to the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) for their unwavering support and trust in the government during the rescue efforts. He encouraged all Nigerians to collaborate with security forces in combating insecurity.

Dr. Bala Audu, President of the NMA, referred to the rescue as a miraculous outcome, highlighting the collective joy among Nigerian doctors. He acknowledged the determination of doctors and the proactive role of the Minister of Health in advocating for Dr. Popoola’s safe return.

Dr. Tope Osundare, President of NARD, conveyed gratitude to President Tinubu for his concern for medical professionals across the nation. He underscored the collaborative efforts between government agencies and the medical community that culminated in the successful release of Dr. Popoola.

The Defence Headquarters earlier confirmed the rescue, conducted through non-kinetic operations in partnership with various security agencies. Maj.-Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, noted that details of the operation remain classified due to ongoing efforts.

The successful rescue has renewed hope among the medical community and the public regarding the commitment of Nigerian authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens.
