Makinde Declares 2027 Election Will Be APC Versus Nigerians

Seyi Makinde

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has asserted that the upcoming 2027 general election will not merely be a contest between political parties but a pivotal showdown between the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Nigerian populace. His comments came during the inauguration of the Late Olusoji Adagunodo zonal secretariat of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ibadan, the state capital, on Saturday.

In his address, Makinde emphasized that the direction of his political ambitions would be dictated solely by himself, dismissing any external influences. He urged members of the PDP to focus on unity and collaboration to restore the nation’s governance.

“The next election will be APC versus Nigerians. It is not even about APC versus PDP,” he stated, urging his party to unify its base and allow the electorate to voice their preferences. He further highlighted the necessity for PDP leaders to look inward, foster collaboration, and work towards national recovery.

Makinde acknowledged ongoing discussions among various political factions, stating, “People have been complaining; they have been talking; they have been making a lot of speculations. Let me say this again, and I will say it myself: nobody will set an agenda for me apart from myself.” He reiterated that the potential for cooperation with Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke lies within their control, separate from the ruling party’s influence.

Adeleke echoed Makinde’s sentiments, stressing the importance of overcoming past divisions for the benefit of their party. “It is better for us to resolve conflicts inside Government House than outside,” he remarked, calling for a renewed focus on building robust administrative and operational frameworks.

Umar Damagum, the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, remembered the late Adagunodo as a significant figure in the party’s achievements. He expressed confidence that with unity, the PDP could reclaim all South-West states and eventually the entire country.
