NiMet Predicts Dust Haze and Thunderstorms Across Nigeria from Sunday to Tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a blend of sunshine, dust haze, and thunderstorms for the country from Sunday through Tuesday. Released on Saturday, NiMet’s weather outlook highlights varying weather conditions across Nigeria’s regions, with specific advisories for the northern, central, and southern areas.

For Sunday, NiMet projects light dust haze with localized visibility of 2 to 5 kilometers across the northern regions, accompanied by predominantly sunny skies with scattered clouds. The southern regions, however, may experience isolated morning thunderstorms, particularly in parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom states. As the day progresses, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected to develop over areas including Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Edo, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Lagos states.

Moving into Monday, the agency foresees a continuation of slight dust haze in northern regions, with sunny skies and scattered clouds in the North Central region. In southern areas, localized thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are likely in the afternoon and evening hours, impacting certain coastal cities.

For Tuesday, the northern region will remain under a slight dust haze, while sunny skies and cloud patches will characterize North Central areas. The southern regions may experience partly cloudy weather, with potential afternoon and evening thunderstorms over coastal cities.

NiMet has advised the public, especially those with respiratory conditions like asthma, to take necessary precautions due to dust particles suspended in the air. The agency also noted that strong winds could precede rainfall in areas prone to thunderstorms. Airline operators are encouraged to obtain specific weather documentation from NiMet for efficient flight planning and safe operations.
