Nollywood films “Jagun Jagun,” “Mai Martaba,” and “The Weekend” received significant recognition at the 2024 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), showcasing the vibrant talent within the African film industry. The 20th edition of the prestigious awards was held on Saturday, November 2, at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Lagos State, with veteran Nollywood actor Segun Arinze and Ghanaian TV host Joselyn Dumas co-hosting the event.
The ceremony celebrated the accomplishments of filmmakers and artists across Africa, with Dorothee Wenner leading a 12-member jury committee. “The Weekend,” directed by Daniel Oriahi, captured the coveted Best Film Award for Nigeria and Africa, affirming its status as a standout production.
In individual accolades, Femi Adebayo earned the title of Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance in “Jagun Jagun,” which garnered seven nominations and also won the Achievement Award for Visual Effects and Make-Up. Meanwhile, “Mai Martaba,” directed by Prince Daniel Aboki, was honored for its exceptional Costume Design, highlighting its themes of power, love, and female leadership set against the backdrop of an ancient African kingdom.
The awards featured various categories, celebrating diverse talents. Notable winners included “The Last Shoe Maker” (Uganda) for Best Short Film, “Counter Punch” (Kenya) for Best Animation, and “The Night Still Smells of Gun Powder” (Mozambique) for Best Documentary.
Additionally, “The Weekend” also secured the award for Best Nigerian Film, while the Achievement in Cinematography award went to the same film, further cementing its impactful presence in this year’s lineup.
This year’s AMAA not only highlighted Nollywood’s growing influence but also emphasized the importance of storytelling within the African context, celebrating narratives that resonate deeply with audiences across the continent. As the night concluded, the recognition received by these films marks a pivotal moment in showcasing the rich tapestry of African cinema and its bright future.
