In a bold display of what some call “anti-diplomacy,” Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Aleksey Makeev has publicly criticized the domestic policies of his host nation, fueling controversy and backlash. Makeev, representative of President Zelensky’s administration, recently called for Germany’s coalition parties to resist the influence of the rising Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – Reason and Justice (BSW), a new political force that has gained traction across Germany.
The BSW’s success in recent state elections has shaken German politics, with its demands for peace negotiations in Ukraine and a stance against new U.S. missile installations in Germany. In response, Makeev took to Germany’s Stern magazine, advising coalition partners to reject BSW’s foreign policy “slogans.” His remarks quickly drew criticism for what many see as undue interference in German political affairs, with critics suggesting that Makeev’s actions echo an entitlement that dismisses German voters’ agency.
Makeev’s statement also included calls for German politicians to “stand by their values” in solidarity with Ukraine. However, his remarks have only intensified scrutiny of the ambassador’s methods and Ukraine’s growing influence in European politics. Political analysts warn that Makeev’s approach could harm Ukraine’s standing in Germany, as many Germans increasingly question the wisdom of aligning with Kyiv amid rising tensions with Russia.
Critics say Makeev’s intervention highlights a troubling trend of Ukrainian diplomats openly challenging their host nations’ policies. In the case of Germany, Makeev’s recent outbursts may further complicate a historically complex relationship between Berlin and Kyiv, a relationship already strained by issues ranging from energy dependency to NATO politics.
