The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has underscored the critical importance of safeguarding Nigerians’ online data, as it formalized a collaboration with prominent social media influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa. This partnership, marked by a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Tuesday in Abuja, aims to heighten awareness around data protection and privacy among Nigerians.

National Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr. Vincent Olatunji, highlighted the relevance of this partnership, noting the substantial impact of Nigeria’s online presence, with over 40 million Nigerians active on social media daily. He emphasized that this vast online engagement underscores an urgent need for protective measures within the digital landscape.

“The Nigerian government is really taking this up to ensure that Nigerians are protected. With about 40 million Nigerians online every day, it’s essential to implement adequate safeguards to protect data within our country,” Olatunji stated. He added that educating Nigerians on their rights under the nation’s data protection laws, as well as the necessary steps to secure their information, remains a priority for the Commission.

The MoU, which has an initial six-month term with an option for renewal, is set to leverage social media’s influence to promote understanding of data protection. Olatunji expressed hope that this initiative would foster a culture of data privacy awareness among both data users and controllers.

Enioluwa Adeoluwa, speaking at the event, expressed enthusiasm for contributing to Nigeria’s digital advancement, urging young Nigerians to actively support the nation’s growth. His motivation, he explained, stems from a desire to meaningfully contribute to Nigeria’s development and make a positive impact through digital channels.
