Gemini AI Assistant Adds New Smart Home Control Extension for Android Users

Gemini AI Assistant Gets Google Home Extension, Can Control Smart Home Devices

Gemini, Google’s AI-powered virtual assistant, is expanding its capabilities with a new extension that allows users to control their smart home appliances directly from their devices. This update is part of an ongoing effort to enhance Gemini’s performance and offer more functionalities to Android users, bringing it closer to the level of the more established Google Assistant.

Currently, Gemini can manage various apps like Google Workspace, Google Maps, YouTube, and YouTube Music. The assistant is also rumored to soon support calling and messaging on the lock screen. With the addition of the Google Home extension, Gemini users can now control an array of smart home devices, such as lights, air conditioners, thermostats, smart TVs, washing machines, and more. However, it is important to note that the extension does not support actions that require security pins, video feeds from cameras, or routine executions.

To access the new smart home features, users must ensure that both the Gemini app and their smart devices are connected to the same Google account. Once this is confirmed, users can open the Gemini app, sign in, and connect it to Google Home. After turning on the extension and granting necessary permissions, users can begin giving natural language commands, such as “Set the dining room for a romantic date night” or “Adjust the AC to a comfortable sleeping temperature.”

One key advantage of Gemini over Google Assistant is its ability to understand and execute natural language prompts, making it more intuitive for users. However, at this time, the feature is only available in English and works through both text and voice commands. It is currently in public preview for those enrolled in Google Home’s Public Preview program.

Gemini AI assistant remains unavailable on iOS devices, limiting its functionality to Android users for now.
