The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has urged the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) to provide detailed data on those displaced both within Nigeria and in neighboring countries due to natural disasters. Kalu made this call during a meeting with Tijani Ahmed, the Federal Commissioner for the Commission, in Abuja on Wednesday.
In a statement issued by Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, the Deputy Speaker highlighted the growing issue of displacement, particularly attributed to climate-induced disasters like flooding and erosion. Kalu emphasized the need for accurate data to better inform the government’s budgeting and oversight efforts.
“We are charging your commission to provide us with a total report on the plight of Nigerians who have been displaced across the country,” Kalu said. “This should include those affected by climate-induced displacement, not just those impacted by war or crisis.” He pointed out that climate change is exacerbating displacement, with areas like Maiduguri already experiencing severe consequences.
Kalu called on the Commission to establish an intervention fund specifically for conducting a thorough needs analysis of displaced persons. He stressed that the report would play a critical role in guiding the government’s budgetary decisions and ensuring adequate support for those affected by natural disasters.
In addition, Kalu urged the Commission to advocate for increased funding, as the current budget allocation of approximately N1.6 billion appeared insufficient to address the widespread needs. He suggested that a documentary or detailed report could help raise awareness about the extent of the crisis, showcasing the significant challenges faced by displaced communities.
The Deputy Speaker requested the report within two weeks to assist in budget preparations, with a copy to be forwarded to the Budget Office of the Federation.
In response, Ahmed thanked Kalu for his support and assured him that the Commission would meet the deadline. He also appealed for more funding, citing the agency’s ongoing struggle to meet the demands of its mandate.
“We will compile the reports on both refugees and displaced persons, and ensure the parliament understands the magnitude of our work and the funding needed,” Ahmed stated.
