They can be terrorists’ informants – Wike justifies war against beggars in FCT

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has justified the recent clamp down on beggars in the city of Abuja.

Media Talk Africa recalls that the Minister had in October this year, “declared war on beggars because Abuja is returning to the beggar’s city”.

His action attracted condemnation from those who believe that the move was not necessary owing to the level of poverty in the country.

But addressing the matter on Wednesday, Wike, who spoke during a live media parley in his office in Abuja, attributed his actions to the threat in the nation’s capital.

According to the former Rivers State Governor, some terrorists’ informants can disguise themselves as beggars to perpetrate evil.

He said, “There is nowhere in this world where you can say employment has been provided for everybody. Tell me one country that has been able to solve the problem of poverty.

“We are talking about security threats and they are saying because of poverty. We should stop using poverty as an excuse for security threats.

“Do you know that you can just see somebody sitting on the side of your house, pretending to be a beggar, but he is an informant.

“He will be giving out information of when you are going out and when you are coming in”.
