Niger legislators invite AEDC area manager on breach of contract

The Niger State House of Assembly has invited the State Area Manager of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, to appear before the House on electricity issues plaguing the state.

This move followed a motion presented by Hon. Sani Umar, representing Kontagora I Constituency, citing AEDC’s breach of contract regarding transmission facilities.

Umar stated that AEDC, as a profit-making company regulated under the Nigerian Electricity Regulation Commission Act 2023, should be held accountable for its actions.

He drew parallels with telecommunication companies, noting that they provide adequate security for their equipment without relying on community contributions.

The lawmaker decried AEDC’s practice of compelling communities to fund the repair or replacement of damaged electricity infrastructure, such as transformers and high-tension wires.

This, Umar argued, is a clear breach of the NERC Act and an additional burden on already struggling Nigerlites.

After his presentation, the House unanimously adopted the motion to show their commitment to addressing the electricity crisis.

The House invited an AEDC representative to appear before it to answer questions on breach of contract concerning transmission facilities.
