EPL: Arteta gives reasons for substituting Odegaard, Rice against Everton

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has explained why he took off Martin Ødegaard and Declan Rice during their 0-0 draw with Everton on Sunday.

With the Gunners struggling to break down the visitors, Arteta made the bold decision to substitute the two midfielders.

He introduced Jorginho and Ethan Nwaneri in their place, although neither player made the desired impact.

When asked about the second-half changes, Arteta said: “Declan, I had to take him off because he was feeling something. And with Martin, it was a tactical decision to try to change the rhythm, especially on that side. I understand that if Ethan comes in and scores a goal, it’s a great sub; if he doesn’t, then you’ve taken your captain out. That’s football.”
