EPL: Big win – Arteta speaks on 3-1 win at Brentford

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has described their 3-1 victory over Brentford on New Year’s Day as “a big win.”

The Gunners fell behind to a Bryan Mbeumo goal before Gabriel Jesus drew them level.

Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli then struck in the second half to win the game for Arteta’s men.

The win takes Arsenal to within six points of Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day, said: “It’s a big win. They’re a really good side, very well coached and they’ve been exceptional at home.

“Especially when you go a goal down early in the game, it becomes a mountain to climb, but the team remained patient. We had to manage the situation emotionally.”

On their second-half display, Arteta added: “We started really well, we took advantage of that and we were very clinical in the box. We probably had to step back a little bit but we looked OK.”
