EPL: I’m not sure – Troy Deeney casts doubt over Arsenal star

Watford legend, Troy Deeney has raised doubts over Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino.

Deeney is not sure if Merino is going to be up to the level Arsenal expects, despite describing his performance against Brentford as ‘quality’.

Merino was on the scoresheet as Arsenal came from a goal down to beat Brentford 3-1 in the Premier League on New Year’s Day.

His teammates Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli also scored for the Gunners.

Naming Merino in his BBC Sport Premier League Team of the Week, Deeney said of the Spaniard: “He was quality today.

“I’m not sure if he’s going to be up to the level of Arsenal but I’m going to give him until next year with a pre-season.”

Merino completed a £32m move from Real Sociedad to Arsenal last summer transfer window.
