Premier League issues statement on Brighton’s penalty in 1-1 draw with Arsenal

The Premier League has issued a statement on Brighton’s controversial penalty in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Saturday.

The Seagulls were able to take a point off Mikel Arteta’s men, thanks to a penalty from Joao Pedro in the second half.

Ethan Nwaneri had given the Gunners the lead with a fine finish before the break.

But Brighton were handed the chance to equalise after referee Anthony Taylor felt William Saliba headbutted Pedro inside the box.

Pedro sent off David Raya the wrong way to ensure the match ended in a draw.

In a statement, the Premier League explained: “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Saliba on João Pedro was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty.”

Arsenal now have 40 points from 20 games, five off Liverpool, who now have two games in hand.
