Mubarak Bala, a young man known for his criticism of religion, has been released after spending four years in prison on charges related to blasphemy.

He was accused of committing blasphemy and inciting the public through posts on his Facebook account.

Mubarak, known for his outspoken criticism of religion, faced charges of religious blasphemy.

On April 5, 2022, the Kano State High Court sentenced him to 24 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to 18 charges, including blasphemy and incitement.

After his release, Mubarak stated that he continues to face challenges from people with different beliefs, especially religious adherents, due to his stance on atheism.

He revealed that he faces threats and a lack of understanding from some individuals because of his views.

During his four years in prison, he said he encountered numerous difficulties, including lack of access to adequate healthcare and harassment from fellow inmates.

He also disclosed that he was compelled to participate in religious practices while incarcerated.

Following his release, several human rights organizations celebrated the development, describing it as a step towards recognizing freedom of expression in Nigeria.

Nevertheless, Mubarak highlighted that he continues to face challenges from those with differing beliefs, particularly religious individuals, because of his rejection of religion.

He called on the government to ensure freedom of expression for everyone, irrespective of their religious or non-religious views.

He also urged religious adherents to strive to understand the perspectives of non-religious individuals to promote peace and mutual understanding within society.
