Nigeria’s Accountant-General vows to tackle revenue shortfall, boost remittances

The Accountant General of the Federation, AGF, has vowed to tackle revenue shortfall in Nigeria through the introduction of aggressive revenue drives.

A statement by OAGF spokesperson, Bawa Mokwa, on Thursday said the Accountant General of the Federation, Mrs Oluwatoyin Madein made the vow while playing host to the House of Representatives Committee on Public Account in Abuja.

According to her, the introduction of the aggressive revenue drive has resulted in the improved funding of the personnel cost, overhead, and capital in 2024.

However, she acknowledged the low revenue remittance by some government-owned enterprises.

Madein further stated that since her resumption in May 2023, the FGN Consolidated Financial Statement has been prepared and audited up to 31st December 2019.

β€œIn collaboration with the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation. We have prepared and audited 2020 and 2021, while 2022 is ongoing,” she added.

AGF explained that OAGF has proposed some enhancements to GIFMIS and IPPIS that will be more robust with the support and cooperation of the National Assembly.

In his response, the House Committee Chairman on Public Accounts, Bamidele Salam, urged the AGF to submit the 2022 Consolidated Financial Statement of the Federation as provided in the 1999 Constitution.

On the issue of the low revenue remittance by government-owned enterprises, he suggested that there is a need for comprehensive measures to block revenue leakages through automation processes and regular audits.
