Centre kicks off research on rampant kidney failure in Yobe

The Biomedical Science Research and Training Centre, BioRTC, in Yobe State University, Damaturu, has announced the commencement of a community-based kidney disease research project in Yobe State.

In a statement issued on Monday, the centre explained that the project is a direct response to the rising burden of kidney disease in the state, particularly in the Bade Local Government Area. It aims to provide evidence-based solutions for improved healthcare outcomes.

“We have a diverse team of experts, including nephrologists, cardiologists, renal care nurses, medical laboratory scientists, chemists, geologists, phlebotomists, community mobilisers, and environmental specialists. Together, we are taking a multidisciplinary approach to addressing this problem by investigating its genetic, environmental, and lifestyle associations,” the statement read.

BioRTC expressed gratitude for the collaboration and support of international partners from the UK, USA, and Ghana, alongside numerous collaborators within Nigeria.

The commencement of the research is widely regarded as a significant step towards finding lasting solutions to deaths caused by kidney failure and related complications.

Kidney failure remains a major public health concern, particularly affecting Bade Local Government Area and parts of Yobe North.
