President Trump wants immediate closure of Education Department

United States President Donald Trump has hinted on closing the federal Education Department with immediate effect.

Trump told reporters on Wednesday that he would “like it to be closed immediately”, stressing that the “Department of Education is a big con job.”

The US President had last week declared his intention to close the Department of Education using an executive order.

President Trump, However, acknowledged that he would need buy-ins from Congress and teachers’ unions to fulfill his campaign pledge to do so.

Reuters reports that immediate closure of the Education Department is capable of disrupting tens of billions of dollars in aid to K-12 schools and tuition assistance for college students.

President Trump spent his first weeks in office pushing through massive changes to the US government, demanding federal employees come back to work in offices or quit.

The president is also seeking cost and job cuts, trying to shut down agencies such as the US Agency for International Development.
