Mining regulation imperative – Niger gov’s wife

The First Lady of Niger State, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Bago, has called for increased awareness to combat the dangers of unregulated mining methods in the country.

Her appeal follows a recent dynamite explosion in Sabon Pegi, Mashegu Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of lives and property.

Speaking during the disbursement of a N100 million donation from Senator Oluremi Tinubu to the affected families, Mrs Bago emphasised the need for caution when handling hazardous materials.

She also announced plans to collaborate with various ministries to educate the public on the risks associated with unregulated mining, which has contributed to declining school enrollment and other social challenges.

Mrs Bago reaffirmed the commitment of the Niger State government, led by Governor Umaru Bago, to the welfare of its citizens by fulfilling its financial obligations to the victims’ families and providing relief items, including food staples, mattresses, and blankets, to support those affected.

The governor’s wife expressed her gratitude to Senator Oluremi Tinubu for her timely assistance to the victims in the state.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Ahmed Baba Suleiman Yumu, commended both the state governor and the First Lady of Nigeria for their swift response to the disaster.
