German Election: Trump, Netanyahu, NATO react as Merz coast to victory

Congratulatory messages and reactions have begun to trickle in as Friedrich Merz and the centre-right Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union (CSU) alliance coast to victory in the German election held on Sunday.

According to the results from Sunday’s election, the CDU/CSU alliance is edging out other parties with 208 seats, while the far-right party, Alternative for Germany, AfD, is trailing behind with 151 seats.

Meanwhile, incumbent chancellor, Olaf Scholz’s SPD lags behind in third position with 120 seats.

Merz, in a run-up to the election, has shown strong support for Ukraine’s defence and Europe.

In reacting to the results so far from the polls, the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, hailed the election as a ‘great day for Germany’.

“Much like the USA, the people of Germany got tired of the no common sense agenda, especially on energy and immigration,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, adding: “This is a great day for Germany.”

Also, Israeli Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Merz, noting that he is looking forward to working with him.

“Looking forward to working closely with your upcoming government to further strengthen the partnership between our two countries,” Netanyahu wrote on X.

On his part, NATO Secretary General, Mark Rutte congratulated Merz on the apparent CDU/CSU victory.

“It’s vital that Europe step up on defence spending, and your leadership will be key,” he said on X.

Earlier US tech Billionaire and President Trump adviser, Elon Musk openly urged the people of Germany to vote for AfD.
