BREAKING: Rivers Assembly summons RSIEC chairman over conduct of 2024 LG elections

The Rivers State House of Assembly has summoned the Chairman of the State Independent Electoral Commission, RSIEC, Justice Adolphus Enebeli (retd.), to appear before it within 48 hours regarding the conduct of the 2024 local government elections.

During Wednesday’s plenary, presided over by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the House warned that failure to comply with the summons would result in the issuance of an arrest warrant against the RSIEC Chairman.

The Assembly also resolved to formally request Governor Siminalayi Fubara to submit the names of all commissioners who were not screened by the Amaewhule-led Assembly.

RSIEC, on Wednesday, scheduled August 9, 2025, for fresh local government council elections in the state.

RSIEC Chairman Enebeli announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting and the official unveiling of the 2025 local government elections timetable and guidelines at the commission’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

Addressing stakeholders, Justice Enebeli reaffirmed RSIEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, credible, and impartial election, urging political parties to adhere to the rules.

Media Talk Africa recalls that the Supreme Court, on Friday, sacked the 23 LGA chairmen, citing a violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act.

The apex court declared the October 5, 2024, elections that ushered in the new chairmen as void.
