Former Ukrainian armed forces chief and current ambassador to Britain, Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, said on Thursday that the United States was destroying the current world order.
Zaluzhnyi, who led Ukraine’s defence during the first two years of Moscow’s full-scale invasion, made the remark as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought to mend relations with Washington following a heated White House dispute with President Donald Trump.
According to the former army chief, Ukraine had maintained its independence despite hostility and threats, even from allies.
The popular general made his comments at London’s Chatham House think tank, following Trump’s decision to freeze military aid and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv— moves aimed at pressuring Zelenskyy into peace talks with Russia while refusing to offer Kyiv security guarantees.
“It’s obvious the White House has questioned the unity of the entire Western world. Because we see that it’s not just the axis of evil and Russia trying to revise the world order, but the US is ultimately destroying this order,” Zaluzhnyi said.
Meanwhile, European leaders on Thursday expressed their support for Ukraine and pledged to boost defence spending to strengthen their ability to stand up to Russia.
