Champions League: What I told Liverpool players after PSG knocked us out – Van Dijk

Liverpool captain, Virgil van Dijk has revealed what he told his teammates after their exit from the Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Van Dijk featured as PSG knocked Liverpool out of the Champions League Round of 16 stage.

The Premier League leaders had defeated PSG 1-0 in the first leg in Paris last week.

However, Ousmane Dembele restored parity at Anfield as the return leg ended 1-0 after 120 minutes.

PSG then won the match via penalty shoot-out, thanks to their goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma who made two good saves tobdeny spot-kicks from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.

Speaking to Amazon Prime after the game, Van Dijk revealed that he told Liverpool players to keep their ‘chin up’ after their painful defeat on penalties, urging them to focus on their next game at the weekend against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

“It was a very intense great game of football,” Van Dijk said. “It was totally there for Liverpool with what we showed in Paris and unfortunately we are out on penalties and that is the reality.

“I think in the first half we created dangerous moments and they have the quality as well, and then it comes down to penalties.

“It’s part of football, I said to the guys, obviously, you can be disappointed because we are out of the competition, but chin up and get ready for the next challenge, a beautiful one on the weekend.”
