Champions League: Wasted substitutions – Stephen Warnock slams Slot over three Liverpool players

Former Liverpool player, Stephen Warnock has criticized manager Arne Slot’s three substitutions in the Reds’ recent elimination from the UEFA Champions League at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 stage.

Liverpool held a 1-0 advantage entering the game at Anfield but lost 1-0 at Anfion penalties.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw aggregate before the Premier League leaders lost the tie in a penalty shootout.

However, Warnock, who came through Liverpool’s youth ranks to play 67 times for them between 2000 and 2007, believes Slot’s substitutions cost them the game.

Speaking with BBC Radio 5, Warnock said: “Darwin Nunez didn’t have an affect on the game and Curtis Jones was poor when he came on.

“Cody Gakpo didn’t look fit. It looked like a wasted substitution from Liverpool.”

Liverpool will now face Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final in their next game on Sunday

They are currently on top of the Premier League table with 15 points ahead of Arsenal, who sit in second position.
