UN Chief Guterres condemns attack on UN personnel

The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, on Wednesday condemned attacks on UN personnel.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Guterres emphasised that all parties involved in Israel’s attack on Gaza were aware of the locations of UN premises.

“The Secretary-General was deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the death of a United Nations Office for Project Services staff member when two UN guesthouses in Deir al-Balah were hit in strikes.

“The locations of all UN premises are known to the parties to the conflict, who are bound by international law to protect them and maintain their absolute inviolability,” the statement read.

The UN Chief expressed his condolences to the family of the staff member killed, adding that at least 280 UN personnel had lost their lives in Gaza since 7 October 2023.

Media Talk Africa reports that Gaza’s health ministry on Wednesday announced that a foreign national was killed and four others wounded in an Israeli airstrike on the site of a United Nations headquarters in central Gaza City.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military, which has resumed its bombardment of Gaza and issued new evacuation orders for residents in combat zones, denied in a statement that it had struck a UN compound in Deir al-Balah.
