South-South governors demand reversal of Rivers State emergency, advocate dialogue

The South-South Governors’ Forum has called for the reversal of the state of emergency in Rivers State declared by President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the situation does not meet constitutional requirements.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the forum, led by its chairman, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State, urged the federal government to seek a more peaceful resolution.

“To reduce tensions and establish a foundation for enduring peace, we propose the rescission of the state of emergency,” the statement read.

The governors acknowledged the president’s constitutional duty to maintain law and order but insisted that the crisis in Rivers State should be resolved through legal and constitutional means.

“The South-South Governors’ Forum expresses concern that the current political situation in Rivers State does not satisfy the criteria for declaring a state of emergency, as outlined in Section 305(3) of the Nigerian Constitution,” the forum stated.

They also rejected the suspension of democratic institutions, emphasizing that the constitution outlines specific procedures for the removal of a governor and House of Assembly members.

“The time for dialogue is now,” the statement added, urging all parties to remain calm and uphold the rule of law.
