2026 World Cup: New Zealand beat New Caledonia, five teams qualify for tournament

New Zealand became the fifth team to confirm their spot at the 2026 World Cup.

The Kiwis are making a return to the tournament for the first time in 16 years following a 3-0 win over New Caledonia.

New Zealand had to wait until the hour mark to open the scoring through Michael Boxall.

It was the 36-year-old’s first international goal for his country.

Kosta Barbarouses doubled their advantage before Eli Just wrapped up the result in the 80th minute.

New Zealand will make their third appearance at the World Cup finals, benefiting from FIFA’s decision to grant the tiny Oceania confederation a confirmed place at the 2026 tournament.

They join Japan, co-hosts the United States, Canada, and Mexico in the expanded 48-team tournament.
