Ex-Chelsea defender on Brazil’s shortlist to replace Dorival Junior as head coach

Former Chelsea defender, Filipe Luis is on Brazil’s shortlist to replace Dorival Junior as their head coach.

The Brazilian Federation are seriously considering a managerial change as coach Junior position is under review.

This comes after Junior led Brazil to a 4-1 defeat against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup qualifier on Tuesday night.
Brazil still remain on course to qualify for next year’s World Cup but the defeat to Argentina has increased pressure on Junior.

Junior is already under scrutiny following two draws against Venezuela and Uruguay last November and also with a loss away to Paraguay in September.

However, according to Globo, Luis is among candidates to replace Junior, but Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti remains Brazil’s first-choice option ahead of next year’s World Cup.

The report added that Ancelotti has privately indicated that he would be open to taking the Brazil job but the Italian has a contract with Real Madrid which expires at the end of next season.

Meanwhile, Luis retired from professional football in 2023.

The 39-year-old has already won three trophies since being appointed as Flamengo’s head coach last year.
