Trump auto tariff: US no longer a reliable partner with Canada, we’ll fight back – PM Carney

The Prime Minister of Canada, Mark Carney, vowed to fight the United States of America with a retaliatory tariff.

This comes as Carney, in a statement, said it is now clear that the US is no longer a reliable partner with Canada.

His comments come as US President Donald Trump on Wednesday announced a 25 percent tariff on automobile imports.

Reacting, Carney said the era of deep economic, security, and military ties between Canada and the United States “is over.”

He described Trump’s automobile tariffs as “unjustified” and said they were in breach of existing trade deals between the countries.

Carney warned Canadians that Trump had permanently altered relations with the United States and that, regardless of any future trade deals, there would be “no turning back.”

“The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over,” Carney said.

He added that Canada would retaliate against the auto tariffs.

“Our response to these latest tariffs is to fight, to protect, and to build,” Carney said.

“We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada,” he added.

Media Talk Africa reports Carney replaced Justin Trudeau as prime minister on March 14.

Apart from Carney, Germany and other European countries had also condemned Trump’s latest automobile tariffs, expected to take effect from April 2, 2025.

Despite the eternal outrage, American workers and Democrats have backed Trump’s auto tariffs.

President Trump, on Wednesday, from the Oval Office, said the automobile tariff “will continue to spur growth like you haven’t seen before.”
