I played against drug dealers without shoes, food – Man United’s Antony

The Brazilian was responding to a question about how he handled pressure in his career.

The left-footed winger, who is reviving his career at Spanish side Real Betis after moving from Manchester United, claimed that playing hungry and without shoes was much more difficult than the setbacks he has faced in his club career.

The winger struggled to find his feet after joining Manchester United under Erik ten Hag and was loaned out following the arrival of Ruben Amorim.

He said via DAZN, “When I’m asked about pressure, I say, ‘What pressure?’ I faced pressure in the favela when I didn’t have shoes to play. I played against drug traffickers and everything. That was real pressure.

“When I left in the morning to go to school, I often didn’t eat. So when I go through difficult moments, I always think about the challenges I overcame in the past.”

Antony, 25, came to Europe in 2020, joining Ajax from Brazilian side São Paulo.

He helped the Dutch giants win the Eredivisie twice in a row, scoring 24 goals and providing 22 assists in 82 games for them.

His exploits with Ajax earned him a move to Old Trafford in the summer of 2022, with the Red Devils paying £85 million to sign him.
