Dorival Júnior sacked as Brazil coach following defeat to Argentina

Dorival Júnior has been sacked as the head coach of Brazil following Tuesday’s 4-1 defeat to rivals, Argentina.

His dismissal was confirmed by Brazil’s football confederation, CBF, on Friday.

Argentina secured their ticket to the 2026 World Cup with the win in Buenos Aires, despite the absence of captain Lionel Messi.

It was Brazil’s heaviest ever defeat in World Cup qualifying.

“The Brazilian Football Confederation announces that coach Dorival Júnior will no longer be in charge of the Brazilian National Team,” the CBF said in a statement.

“The board thanks the professional and wishes him success in his continued career. From now on, the CBF will work to find a replacement.”

The decision to fire Dorival was taken after a meetingg between CBF president Ednaldo Rodrigues and Dorival.

The 62-year-old leaves with a record of 7 wins, 7 draws and 2 defeats from his 16 games in charge.
