United States Speaker, Mike Johnson, has suggested the only way Donald Trump can serve a third term in office as US President is through a constitutional amendment.
This follows Trump’s claim over the weekend that he was “not joking” about the possibility of seeking a third term.
The 78-year-old Republican asserted there were “methods” for doing so.
However, according to Johnson, achieving this would require an amendment to the constitution.
Speaking to NBC News about the development on Tuesday, Johnson said: “I just told everybody to read the constitution; there is a constitutional path. You have to amend the constitution to do it, and that is a high bar.”
Johnson then said that while he and Trump had “joked about it”, he believed the president “recognises the constitutional limitations.”
