David Mark warns against reprisal attacks over killings in Benue communities

Former Senate President, David Mark, has strongly condemned the recent wave of violent attacks by suspected armed herdsmen on several communities across Benue State.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Mumeh, Mark expressed deep concern over the spate of killings and destruction of property worth billions of naira in the affected areas.

The attacks have reportedly impacted local government areas including Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Ohimini, Okpokwu, Ado, Ogbadibo, Gwer-West, Gwer-East, Katsina-Ala, Logo, and Ukum.

He recalled a recent incident in Gwer-West where killings sparked youth protests, and noted that only last week, multiple lives were lost while others were abducted in the Otukpo axis.

A visibly distressed Senator Mark, however, acknowledged some progress by security operatives in addressing the crisis, stating:

“It is heartwarming that some of the beasts involved in the dastardly acts have been apprehended by security agents.”

He called for a thorough investigation and swift justice, emphasizing the importance of holding all perpetrators accountable.

“I urge all concerned to do a diligent investigation and ensure that all the people immediately and remotely involved should be made to face the full wrath of the law.”

Mark also urged communities to remain vigilant and proactive in assisting security agencies.

“I also call on the youths in our various communities to ensure vigilance and report any suspicious behaviour of people and their movements to law enforcement agencies to prevent reoccurrence.”

Importantly, he appealed for restraint and unity, warning against ethnic profiling or retaliatory violence.

“There should be no stereotyping of any ethnic group or reprisal attacks on any group of people due to these unfortunate incidents.”

Extending his condolences, he added: “I commiserate with those who lost their loved ones at the hands of the marauders. May their souls rest in peace.”
