I was elected to serve AMAC, not all Nigerians” — Maikalangu explains defection to APC

The Chairman of Abuja Municipal, AMAC, Mr. Christopher Maikalangu, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, citing the need to secure better opportunities for his constituents.

Maikalangu announced his defection in a statement issued on Monday, by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Kingsley Madaki.

According to the AMAC Chairman, the decision was informed by the political misalignment between the council and the federal government, which he said has hindered the area from accessing federal appointments and employment opportunities.

“The position we took is for the good of democracy and to ensure that the good people of AMAC move forward,” Maikalangu said.

“The decision is rooted in the collective interest of the constituents. I was not elected to lead the entire Nigerians, but the AMAC residents.”

He added that the move was a strategic step aimed at promoting inclusive governance and driving sustainable development for the people of AMAC.

“I looked at the interests of my people and I have seen that these interests cannot be protected in any other platform,” he said, expressing confidence that the APC would provide a more promising platform to advance the welfare of his constituents.

Maikalangu, who was elected under the PDP in the 2022 AMAC council election, polled a total of 19,302 votes to defeat his closest rival, Murtala Karshi of the APC.

His defection marks a significant political development in the Federal Capital Territory, with potential implications for the local political landscape ahead of future elections.
