Benue terrorism attacks: Gov Alia confirms 55 deaths

The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has confirmed the killing of 55 persons in coordinated attacks by suspected herdsmen on communities in Logo and Ukum Local Government Areas, which occurred between Thursday and Friday.

Governor Alia made this known on Saturday during a visit to the affected areas, where he conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the devastation wrought by the attackers.

Condemning what he described as an “unprovoked invasion,” the governor issued a stern warning that any native found to be collaborating with the attackers would face the full weight of the law.

He assured residents that the state government was actively taking steps to address the persistent security challenges threatening peace and stability in the region.

Governor Alia stated that the people of Benue had both the will and capacity to defend themselves, but cautioned against taking matters into their own hands.

“I urge our people not to take the law into their own hands but allow security agencies to handle the situation.

“About 27 people were killed in Logo, while 28 lost their lives in Ukum,” he said.

He praised the security forces for their swift and courageous response to the attacks and urged them to continue maintaining vigilance across the region.

The governor also extended his appreciation to the Tor Sankera, Chief David Sev-Av, for stepping into leadership during a time of great crisis. He encouraged the traditional ruler to dissuade his subjects from engaging in reprisal attacks that could worsen the situation.

Expressing cautious optimism, Governor Alia noted that the renewed national security strategy under President Bola Tinubu would hopefully mark a turning point in the fight against insecurity, especially in Benue State.
