FIRS orders immediate closure of unauthorised tax collection accounts

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued a directive to all banks in Nigeria to immediately identify and shut down any tax or levy collection accounts not authorised under its TaxPro Max platform.

The directive, which was contained in a public notice titled “Directive to Close Unauthorised FIRS Tax Collection Accounts”, was signed by FIRS Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, and made available to journalists on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media, Dare Adekanmbi.

According to the FIRS, the move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance efficiency, promote transparency in tax administration, and ensure uniformity in tax collection and reconciliation processes across the country.

“Effectively immediately, all tax and levy collections on behalf of FIRS must be processed exclusively pursuant to an assessment raised on the TaxPro Max platform,” the notice stated.

“All banks participating in the FIRS Collection, Remittance and Reconciliation Scheme are hereby advised to comply with this directive within the stipulated period.”

Dr. Adedeji stressed that the centralisation of collections via the TaxPro Max platform would eliminate leakages and foster seamless reconciliation of tax payments.

“We count on your cooperation to ensure a smooth transition to this centralised system, thereby contributing to a more transparent and efficient tax collection process,” he said.

The notice also encouraged taxpayers and financial institutions with concerns or questions to contact the FIRS Revenue Accounting and Refund Department (RAAD) for support and clarifications.

The TaxPro Max platform, a domestically developed tax administration solution, enables taxpayers to handle various tax activities including registration, filing, payment, and obtaining tax clearance certificates.
