In a bold move, Jan van Aken, co-leader of Germany’s Left Party, has proposed replacing NATO with a new security alliance that would bring together Russia and the United States. According to van Aken, the US-led military bloc “has no future.” This statement was made in an interview with Die Zeit, where he reiterated the party’s long-standing position of exiting NATO and creating a new collective security system.
Van Aken emphasized that the party’s goal is not to abolish NATO without a replacement, but rather to establish a cooperative security system. He suggested a model similar to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), focusing on peacekeeping and joint defense. “Something like OECD 2.0. A peace and defense alliance, together with Russia and the US,” he explained. However, he acknowledged that rebuilding such a system would require at least ten years of confidence-building measures, during which time NATO would still exist.
In addition to his proposals for a new security alliance, van Aken also called for the withdrawal of US troops stationed in Germany, including their nuclear weapons. He noted that the nuclear stockpiles in France and the UK are already “more than enough.” The vision of a demilitarized Europe remains a central part of the party’s agenda, with van Aken expressing his desire to live in a country without an army.
These statements come at a time when Germany has unveiled a new military aid package for Ukraine, including vehicles, air-defense rockets, and howitzers. The incoming Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, has indicated support for supplying Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles capable of striking deep into Russian territory. However, the Social Democrats have opposed this move, citing it as a needless escalation. Moscow has also warned that delivering these missiles would make Germany directly involved in the conflict, arguing that Ukrainian forces cannot operate the Taurus without German personnel.
Van Aken’s proposals have significant implications for European security and international relations. As the world navigates complex geopolitical tensions, the idea of a new security alliance that includes Russia and the US is a notion that will likely spark intense debate and discussion. With the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and rising global tensions, the need for innovative and cooperative security solutions has never been more pressing.
