Lagos State Impounds Over 200 Unroadworthy Vehicles in Safety Crackdown

VIS cracks down on unfit vehicles across Lagos

In a significant crackdown on road safety, the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) has impounded over 200 vehicles found to be unroadworthy during a recent statewide enforcement operation. This move aims to enhance road safety and reduce the number of accidents caused by poorly maintained vehicles on the state’s roads.

The operation, led by the Director of the Lagos VIS, Mr. Akin-George Fashola, focused particularly on commercial minibuses, including Danfo and Korope, which are widely used for public transportation in the state. Fashola emphasized that the enforcement drive is not limited to private vehicles but encompasses all categories of vehicles that contribute to the state’s transport ecosystem. He encouraged all vehicle owners, especially those planning to use their vehicles for commercial purposes, to ensure their vehicles meet the required roadworthiness standards before putting them into operation.

Fashola’s message was clear: ensuring roadworthiness is a critical step before commercializing any vehicle. He advised vehicle owners to take advantage of the VIS’s annexe offices for proper inspections, a proactive measure that could prevent potential hazards on the roads. This initiative reflects the agency’s commitment to sustained enforcement, aiming to create safer roads and a more efficient transport system in Lagos.

The VIS’s proactive approach to tackling the issue of unroadworthy vehicles is a positive step towards improving road safety and reducing accidents in Lagos. By targeting both private and commercial vehicles, the agency is working to create a safer and more reliable transport environment for all road users. As the Lagos VIS continues its enforcement efforts, vehicle owners are reminded of the importance of maintaining their vehicles to the required standards, not just for their safety but for the safety of all road users. This concerted effort towards road safety is a welcome move, aligning with the global push for safer, more sustainable transport systems.
