EPL: We shouldn’t laugh – Neville reveals what Ten Hag told him about Weghorst

Former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville has revealed what manager Erik ten Hag told him about the club’s January signing, Wout Weghorst.

Weghorst joined Man United on loan from Besiktas for a fee of €3 million in January.

The Dutch forward has featured regularly for Man United under Ten Hag despite his lack of goals.

His only goal in 10 appearances for the Red Devils came against Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup.

Speaking on his podcast, Neville said Ten Hag told him that the 30-year-old brings something to the team, adding that he can press opponents.

“I love Wout Wehghorst. We should not laugh, but there are times today… You have to admire Erik ten Hag picking him for every single match,” Neville said.

“I asked Ten Hag about that before the game. He feels he brings something to the team, and I can see why. Man United last season, there was this debate about whether or not they could press with Cristiano Ronaldo. They could not close down from the front. They could not press. You have to be able to press in the modern game.

“What Weghorst does, he’s very good in transition. He’s very good at defending set pieces. He is very good when they are in shape and he is watching space. He is doing a vital job for a team that has got a lot of attacking talent. That is why he’s playing every week,” he added.
