Osun 2026: APC National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru rejects zoning guber ticket

The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Senator Ajibola Basiru, has kicked against the proposed zoning arrangement for the party’s 2026 governorship ticket in Osun State.

Basiru made this known in a Facebook post on Monday.

The former senator representing Osun Central Senatorial District, who firmly stated that zoning is not part of the APC constitution, emphasised that every eligible party member should have the right to contest.

He also argued that insisting on zoning undermines the democratic process and could alienate voters from zones excluded by such arrangements.

He reiterated his opposition to zoning, stressing that the focus should be on competence and unity, not regional division.

He wrote, “When you insist on zoning, aren’t you going to canvass votes in other zones whose aspirants you have denied?” he questioned in his post.

“Zoning is not in our constitution. People should be free to contest. When you insist on zoning, aren’t you going to canvass votes in other zones whose aspirants you have denied? I’m not in support of zoning. – Senator Ajibola Basiru, PhD.”

Basiru’s rejection of zoning is coming amid agitations by APC stakeholders and other interested parties for the guber ticket in the party to be zoned to Osun West Senatorial District.

The Osun APC is also tilting towards a particular candidate from the Osun West Senatorial District who allegedly has the backing of Adegboyega Oyetola, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy and immediate past governor of the state.

Basiru, who until his assumption of the office of national scribe for the APC represented Osun Central Senatorial District in the Senate from 2019 to 2023, lost his seat to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, senator Fadeyi Oluwole Olubiyi.
